And then we began to notice, to hear how
they reveal themselves. Again and again

They said,
“Don’t be fooled.
See me as I am.”

A place that kindles the senses.
The soft ones found out here
in the quiet. While water
soothes bricks and fireflies
dance like stars in the grass.
This wind

carries us towards something feral.

I cross the bridge back to mainland
and for a moment I can See
where the water goes round.

This body of work is not about Belle Isle itself, but the ways in which it deepens our understanding of this city as Place. We are curious about what grows here and the movement across seasons. The Isle brings us in and out. From it we can locate Detroit on the river, as a moment between two great lakes. We return to it almost daily. While walking, we find ourselves in communion with an internal and external landscape. It is an intimate and curious thing, a practice as simple as stepping outside.
